In spite of threatening weather, no place to park, and counter protesters who were not from Naperville, we had a great event!
The police estimated we outnumbered the counter protesters from Chicago 2:1. We set the record straight on the AZ law, and celebrated our country and LEGAL immigration.
Thanks to everyone who walked over to Cold Stone Creamery and supported this AZ business. It was a great opportunity to support AZ financially, and we were able to educate the "scoopers" behind the counter about the AZ law.
Highlights of the event:
The SONS OF LIBERTY were awesome with their flags, motorcycles, and love for this country.
We proudly sang our National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance in spite of screams of "racist" and Spanish chants throughout both the anthem and the pledge from the counter protesters. (We clearly went out of our way to include them in the Pledge and let them know that's what we were doing). They decided to continue screaming chants in Spanish throughout.
The police force was overwhelming, but after hearing about other events with this group of counter protesters, it was needed and appreciated. Thank you Naperville PD .. although we've heard your presence also intimidated some of our supporters from coming.
BTW ... the counter protesters proudly displayed their ILLEGAL status on a banner "Undocumented." hmmmmm ... why weren't they questioned by ICE?
The Naperville Sun placed an article in the Sunday paper. Here is the link so you can make comments. click here (note you will need to create an account to log in and post a comment .. well worth the time and hassle)
You'll note in the printed paper, all the photos are of the counter protesters who aren't even from Naperville! There were A LOT of Napervillians there on the Stand with AZ side. Why weren't they interviewed or pictured? Isn't this our hometown paper?
A few important points to know about the AZ law that you can bring up in your next BBQ conversation:
Page 1, Line 39 of the AZ law says when an officer stops you for breaking a current law (traffic, robbery, homicide), you need to show your driver's license or govt. ID, and then you'll be assumed a legal resident. (I have to show my driver's license when I'm pulled over, or when I take money out of my own bank account).
FOUR TIMES in the law it PROHIBITS "considering race, color, or national origin in implementing" the law. (and you can take them to court if you think you've been profiled)
The law STRENGTHENS protections against racial profiling by forcing the local police to verify with federal government the person's residency status IF a driver's license or other govt. IDs are not shown vs. current law that enables officers to make an arrest under just their "suspicion".
There must be "lawful contact" for an officer to ask for a driver's license ... for those who don't understand that ... it means you have to be breaking the law in some way to begin with ...
